Digitizing India’s Payment Ecosystem

India – the country with the largest democracy in the world signifies its importance in having a flexible yet secured payment gateway ecosystem which can help the people of the country for an easy and convenient way of doing the day-to-day transactions with advantages unmatched by the traditional payment system. “Cashless, Faceless and Paperless” are the main agenda for promoting the new payment system in the country with a long term vision plan on successfully executing the Digital India Programme by the Govt. of India.

 

The Need for Digital Payment Service: Technology today has reached and grown to such an extent that even the complex of things can be performed in a fraction of a second. In terms of financial assistance, till a few years back we could not imagine that money transfer could have been so easy and convenient, irrespective of the years-old traditional method where people have to go and queue in long lines in the banks to transfer the money or carry a large amount of cash which increases the risk of theft and other anti-socio activities. As such, there was a big gap in overcoming these issues which led the Govt. of India think of new and innovative tactics for a digital payment ecosystem for the common masses. The issuance of an enormous amount of paper currency by the Reserve Bank of India was also one of the important reasons for moving toward a new technology-based digital payment ecosystem in the country.

 

Mode of Digital Payment Services in India: With the advent of smartphones and mobile applications, people of India started getting their desired services right just through a click of a button. The entire banking system came into the palm of the hands of common people and thus made it easy for the Government to introduce various modes of Digital Payment services in the country among which one of them was the Unified Payment Interface or popularly known as UPI which later became one of the most desired methods of digital payment services in the country. Apart from UPI, the Government of India and banking institutions also promoted some of the existing methods of cashless services like Mobile Wallets, POS, Internet Banking, Micro ATMs, AEPS, Banking Cards etc.

Introducing UPI Technology: Today, if anyone in India wants to transfer money to their known ones, 90% of people’s first choice would be the Unified Payment Interface. UPI has been a revolution in the Indian finance sector and this can be stated by the fact that according to NPCI; the governing body for UPI, has recorded over 45 billion transactions in the fiscal year 2022 and is expected to reach 217 billion (21,700 crores) transactions by the financial year 2026. It is worth mentioning that companies like PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm etc. also play a vital role in the growth of this digital revolution in the country.

 

Role of Technology in Changing the Ecosystem: As it is rightly said by N. Chandrababu Naidu – “In information technology, money is not the issue. Willingness to implement and execute is the issue”; the desire to change the age-old payment system in the country allowed Information Technology to play its role as the primary medium to help the citizens of India experience the easiest yet a safer way of peer-to-peer (P2P) as well as person-to-merchant (P2M) payments system which forced Indian consumers to helm the technological aspects used in the financial sector. Introduction to QR-based payment facilities and transferring of funds through mobile numbers, just by the use of an application or swiping of payment cards in POS machines by the use of NFC Technology are some of the highlighting prospects in making this structure so popular among the masses.

 

 

The Growth: The MSME sector in India has grown exponentially over the recent years, thanks to the various startups in the form of fintech companies rising to the cause. Hey Google – What’s the weather for today; sounds quite strange, right, asking a bot about a day’s weather? But this is probably the best example I can say to describe one of the most talked-about terms in the current technology world which is the Internet of Things (or IoT).

IoT in its simplest form can be defined as the concept of connecting multiple devices to the Internet to make it work as a smart device. It can be anything from a smartphone to a smart door locking system or even a small portable smartwatch. How 5G Technology will change the course of the Internet in India

The Internet has always been a boon for mankind. Right from the invention of the World Wide Web by Tim Berners-Lee in 1989, it has always served us; and today, we cannot even imagine a day without the Internet. As Bruce Sterling rightly said – “the Internet belongs to everyone and no one”. It has transformed us on how to connect with the outside world, organizing the flow of things and sharing information.  Today, there are 3.97 billion internet users worldwide with China leading the countries with the highest number of internet users of 854 million (source: statista).

Growth of Internet usage in India

India has always been a technology hub for the global market. But, unfortunately, the usage of it has never been the case likewise. Slow internet speed with high pricing has been the major factor for the lesser usage of the Internet among common people. But, with the entry of the telecom company Jio in the year 2016, the whole scenario was completely changed. The company started providing 4G Internet services in India at an affordable price. Common people who had to once rely on 2G or 3G data for just a couple of GB’s, has now started using 4G Internet speed in their mobile portable devices. People started embracing the Work from Home culture, thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic. But that was only possible due to high-speed internet. Looking at this market change, many ISP’s started providing high-speed Internet at affordable prices and thus came the revolution of the massive Internet usage in India.

5th Generation Internet or commonly termed as 5G technology is the next big advancement for a developing country like India. With the huge consumption of daily data usage in today’s time, the people of India are eagerly waiting for the commercial launch of the next level of the Internet. Govt. of India has started the auction process for the spectrum allocation and many ISP’s have also tested its 5G speed in cities like Hyderabad, Delhi, Kolkata etc. It is expected that the 5G Internet in India will soon be launched by the mid of 2022.

5G wireless technology is built to deliver multi-Gbps speeds, with zero lag, low latency and more reliable network strength. It is 100 times faster than the 4th Gen, at least in a stable environment. It has been found to have a maximum speed capacity of 10Gbps. Downloading huge files will just be a matter of seconds while streaming full HD videos without lag or blurry screen. There will be complete dominance of the IoT ecosystem with web-enabled smart devices. The master project of smart cities by Govt. of India will also be streamlined with the Internet of Things (IoT) with the adoption of the 5G cellular network technology.

Hence, we can say, the Internet is the fuel for running any tech-driven innovation & development and with a stable and high-speed internet technology like 5G network, a country like India can make the best out of it with the enormous talent of the workforce it has which can play a big role in making the Digital Transformation, a dream well thought of.

What is Blockchain??

Blockchain was originally created to be a decentralized ledger of Bitcoin transactions that take place within the Bitcoin network.

A decentralized or distributed database/ledger essentially means that the storage devices, where the ledgers are located, are not linked to a common processor. The blockchain contains the ever-growing list of transactions by way of blocks. Each block is time-stamped and then linked to the previous block to become a part of the blockchain.

Users are only able to edit the sections of the blockchain that belong to them. In order to edit, the user is required to have private keys, which is equivalent to a password. The great feature of blockchain technology is the fact that every copy is synchronized even though the blockchain is not linked to a common processor or accessed through devices linked to the processor. An example of storage devices linked to a common processor could be office computers logged onto the company network.

A master data file is edited and saved. No synchronization is required as there is only one master file stored centrally. With blockchain, it would be as though all the computers were off-line but were able to access and edit a master file that was always in sync, without there being a need for the master file saved on the company’s central server.

Why is Blockchain Needed?

Since the invention of the World Wide Web and cell phones, there has been very little to shout from the rooftops about. Sure, we’ve got cars that can drive themselves and the hype over artificial intelligence is building, but nothing is likely to be as material as the introduction of blockchain technology, not only into the financial system but into everyday life.

For the financial system, the prospect of a decentralization away from a centralized system is a daunting one to consider.

Blockchain is not only Bitcoin, it’s much more than That

There are countless areas in which blockchain technology can have a dramatic effect. Some examples include:

Supply Chains: The ability to track foods from farm to shelf is one that has recently made the news. IBM announced that it has begun working with the larger food suppliers, including Nestle and Walmart, to take advantage of blockchain technology. Of particular interest to food, suppliers are being able to identify the source of food contamination, as well as being able to track the producer within the food supply chain. Beyond food, the transparency of blockchain can also give consumers the true source of manufactured goods, which has become important in today’s society.

Energy sector: The trading of energy with the use of blockchain could allow the consumer to sell excess energy to their neighbors, removing the control from the utility companies. Similar to financial markets, there may even be a range of prices as supply and demand dictate price.

Governments: Governments have already begun pilot projects to incorporate blockchain technology into their daily operations. The intention being to make the efficiency gains that the technology can deliver. In the UK, the government has used blockchain technology in the disbursement of student loans and also to track the payment of benefits to the underprivileged. The government’s view is that blockchain could reduce corruption, the number of fraud cases and costs by shifting away from the current use of paper.

Elsewhere, governments are looking to use the technology for record keeping, including land property deeds. The use of the ledger could, in fact, be used to record the transfer of titles and deeds of property.

Healthcare: The removal of the paper trail in the healthcare system and making patients’ medical records are available to the patients’ without the threat of hacking or leaking. Additionally, a decentralized ledger of medical data may even be able to provide the necessary data points to support the fight against virus and disease.

Music Industry: Protection of rights and distribution of earnings within the music industry is a key consideration, as the industry looks at ways to adopt the technology. Removing the ability for piracy and allowing listeners to download music stored on the blockchain, paying for the music with cryptocurrency would be one of the paradigm shifts in the industry. It would also mean that the right people get paid… It may well be the death of distributors, but it’s unlikely that artists within the industry will lose any sleep over such a prospect. Blueprints have already been published in a decentralized blockchain ledger that is expected to solve the issues of rights and payments. The first artist to engage cryptocurrencies in the music industry was Bjork with a release of a new album that provides buyers with 100 Audiocoins.

These are just a small number of examples. Blockchain technology is being explored across all of the major sectors and with many industries already rolling out pilot projects, the skeptics may have to eat their words.
